Interview first impressions

First Impressions (330 x 220).jpg

Okay, so you got an interview... good start but there's a whole load of work still to do. Your interview is there for an employer to check out what you said in your CV or application and to find out more about you.

If you want to know more about what to expect during your interview look at our article on interview techniques. Right now let's have a think about what your interviewer is thinking when you walk through the door.

First impressions are formed by:

55% is what we see:

  • Appearance
  • Posture
  • Body language
  • Facial expression
  • Eye contact

38% is how we hear:

  • Tone and pitch
  • Pace and pause
  • Clarity of speech
  • Accent

7% is what we hear:

  • Content/meaning

So a massive 93% of first impressions has nothing to do with what you actually say but more about the way you look and how you say whatever it is that comes out of your mouth.

Make sure you dress well, ensure you look the interviewer in the eye, smile and use a firm handshake as you introduce yourself.

Be aware of your body language - try not to appear defensive or over familiar and be positive.
