Sometimes, when applying for a job, it can seem as
though the vacancy advert is written in another language! With so
many tricky terms and sayings, it's not rare to find yourself
confused before you even send an application off!
Have a look at our glossary for a complete guide to those pesky
job adverts:
Pro rata - This usually follows the salary
figure for a part-time vacancy. It means 'proportionately', so for
example, if a position offered £12,000 for full-time (40 hours per
week) and you only work 20 hours per week, you will earn £6,000 in
a year.
CCDL - The job requires you to hold a Clear
Current Driving Licence (no points, bans or convictions)
EXP - You must have had relevant work
experience before applying for the vacancy
AGY - This vacancy is being advertised by a job
agency
Quote ref. - When enquiring about a listed
vacancy over the phone, quote the advert's reference number
PA - Per annum - how much you will be paid
yearly
PW - Per week - how much you will be paid
weekly
CV - Curriculum vitae/resume
Fixed term - This means that the vacancy is
only to be filled for a limited amount of time, e.g. a one-year
contract
Closing date - You must have gotten your
application to the employer before this date if it is to be
considered
C. - Circa (meaning "about") in regards to
hours or salary
OTE - On-target earnings - The vacancy offers a
salary that is part basic (fixed rate) and part commission, which
relates to how well you perform in that role. For example, a
vacancy at a call centre could offer you £50 for every
sale/subscription you make over the phone
FT - Full time - you will work over 35 hours
per week
PT - Part time - you will work less than 35
hours per week
CRB check - This stands for 'Criminal Records
Bureau check', which will either confirm you don't have a criminal
record, or list any relevant convictions, cautions, warnings,
reprimands, bans and fixed penalties you have been given
