Everyone knows how important exercise is as part of staying healthy and happy. But it's easy to become lazy about getting or staying fit. A pile up of schoolwork, working long hours and a busy social life can all try to prevent your fitness plans.

Here are 9 ideas to help keep you motivated, fit and healthy:

  1. You have to exercise regularly. There are no shortcuts to getting fit, and in fact it will take working up a sweat at least three times per week for you to feel healthier and notice an increase in your energy levels and enthusiasm, and possibly a decrease in your weight and waistline. Accepted advice is that everyone should be exercising for at least 30 minutes three times per week, but if you could make this for 45 minutes four times per week you'll be flying towards a new you.
  2. Smoking, drinking or using drugs all have a huge impact on your body and will stop you being really healthy.
  3. The ideal exercise plan would involve an aerobic or cardiovascular workout, weight training and stretching (to help avoid injuries and increase flexibility).
  4. Keeping a record of your exercise can help you track your progress.
  5. For some people joining a health club, leisure centre or gym can be the thing that keeps them motivated. It can give access to a range of classes, machines and facilities that keep you interested.
  6. Why not try a new exercise or fitness DVD? They can allow you to try new activities in the privacy of your own home.
  7. There are loads of exercise you can do at home such as using a skipping rope, doing push-ups and crunches that will help you exercise even when it is too cold or rainy to go outside.
  8. Find something that really enjoy and you are more likely to keep it up. Think about the things you like. For example:
    - If you are outgoing and looking for new friends, consider a team sport.
    - If you are serious about relaxing, check out yoga classes.
    - If you are goal orientated and competitive, think about running or swimming.
  9. Aim for at least eight hours of sleep per night to help your body recover from all of this new activity.
  10. Bear in mind also that unless you eat the right things all of this exercise isn't going to benefit you in the way it should. Check out our guide to Eating Healthy here.
