Christmas is over and it's time for everyone to get back
to school, college, university or work. No matter how long you had
for your break, it's always a pain having to slip back into your
old routine (especially after all of those lie-ins and fry-ups) and
everyone feels the same. But what if you've truly had enough? If
you can't bear the thought of going back to college, have a read of
this…
Think carefully
Before you make any decisions, think about why exactly you don't
want to go back.
- Do you hate your course?
- Do you hate the people on your course or your tutor?
- Would you rather be studying something else?
- Are you being bullied?
- Can you just not be bothered?
Each reason has a different answer so it's vital that you're
completely honest with yourself. Most people tend to not want to go
back to their studies/work because they've become too used to
having tons of free time. Having to be in a classroom for the
majority of that time can be a daunting thought, but you have to
get past that and decide just what it is that's putting you off. If
you just can't be bothered going in, you'll just have to get used
to it, but if you feel as though your course isn't right for you,
read on…
Your course
It's not unlikely to be enthusiastic about something at one
point and then completely lose interest in it a few weeks later.
It's extremely common for students to do a complete 180 on their
course and wonder "Why the hell did I do photography?" or realise
that their course has nothing to do with their career of choice.
After a few months on the course and a few weeks to reflect on
their time at college, most tend to come to the conclusion that
college just isn't for them.
College
Similarly to the wrong course situation, some students realise
that college or other education isn't what they want to do. Again,
this can be for any number of reasons. Maybe your career choice
doesn't require higher education so you feel as though you're
wasting your time? Maybe you never really wanted to go to college
in the first place but didn't feel as though you had a choice? Some
even go as far as enrolling in college just because their mates
will be there which just isn't worth it in the long run!
Alternatives
College is not the be all and end all of a successful career.
Millions of people have made something out of themselves without a
sterling education and it's not hard to believe that you can too!
If you're not ready for the world of work yet, you might want to
consider taking on an apprenticeship course. Apprenticeships
combine elements of studying and working, allowing you to earn a
wage whilst you work towards an industry-specific qualification.
Alternatively, if you're ready to take the plunge, you can look
into applying for full-time work. We've got around 30,000 jobs and
apprenticeships vacancies listed on this site, so having a look at
our listings should be your first step!

What to do…
Once you've found the reason why college seems unbearable to
you, consider sitting down with your family, friends or even your
tutor to discuss your options. Confronting your parents may be
scary at first but they're sure to be understanding! Simply explain
your reasons for not wanting to continue with your education and
hit them with your plan! Make sure you've fully researched what you
want to do before making your thoughts public and be sure to
actually have an alternative to your education in the first place!
Your understanding parents might not be so thoughtful if you reveal
that you want to drop out of college "just because."
