An apprenticeship is the ideal way to earn whilst you
learn, combining elements of education, training and employment
simultaneously. Apprenticeships offer the same tasks and roles as
regular employment, though there is a greater amount of support.
When you're on an apprenticeship scheme, you are performing a real
job for a real business or employer. Over two million young people
start apprenticeships every year and the numbers are constantly
increasing, becoming one of the most popular options for
school-leavers.
What are the benefits?
Unlike work placements or voluntary programs, apprenticeships
are legally entitled to a wage from as little as £95 per week.
However, this is only minimum wage. Apprenticeships, on average,
earn around £200 per week, depending on the profession. Plus, the
more skills and qualifications you pick up, the more your wage will
increase! You may also be given money to spend on tools, clothing,
books or other equipment, such as accessibility features for those
with a disability. As well as earning relevant qualifications and
getting all-important work experience, apprentices receive the same
treatment as other employees, such as pension schemes, paid
holidays, union representation, leisure facilities and subsidised
canteens (if applicable). Plus, studies show that those who have
completed apprenticeship schemes earn around £100,000 more in a
lifetime than other employees.
What qualifications will I earn?
All apprenticeships offer work-based qualifications, such as
National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) and Key Skills
qualifications, no matter which profession you choose to pursue. If
some cases you can earn BTEC certificates, or even UCAS points,
which go towards a university application. As well as a physical
award, doing an apprenticeship teaches you the skills and traits
that you may need to pursue your career of choice. You earn
first-hand experience in the field and have the opportunity to see
what the job is really like.
I'm convinced. Where do I sign?
To apply for an apprenticeship, you follow the same process as
you would do when applying for a standard vacancy. Simply look for
apprenticeships on the Internet (BIGDOG have hundreds!) and apply
through the website! You may have to face an interview and some
assessment before being given the job and the start date will be
ultimately decided by the employer. It's possible to apply for
apprenticeships all through the year, so what are you waiting for?
